  • South Rhine Church Closure

The Murray Plains and Hills congregation plan to hold a memorial service to mark the South Rhine Church closing.

South Rhine Uniting Church

South Rhine Uniting Church

  • Date of South Rhine Church closing

The plan is to gather for a shared/picnic lunch to be followed by a memorial service at 2 pm on April the 25th [Anzac Day] 2010.

  • Book of Memories

A Book of Memories will be kept in the Mount Pleasant Church prior to this event.  Interested parties are invited to submit useful material such as photos; memorabilia like Sunday School certificates; relevant historical anecdotes.  Material may be e-mailed; brought to any Mt Pleasant service or forwarded via post to our secretary. This will be eventually submitted to the UCSA archives for preservation.

  • Valuable Memorabilia

If you have photos or artifacts suitable for display on this occasion, but that are too precious to you or your family to donate to the Book of Memories, we will be pleased to display them on a Bulletin Board on the day, and to return them to you after the service. Please e-mail details to us.

  • Closing Service (2.00 PM)

We have contacted former minister The Rev Keith Batt of this congregation to conduct the memorial service, and we have tracked down another former minister the Rev Ian Parsons in Victoria. We have been supplied with some appropriate material for this South Rhine Church closing service by Synod.

Update: Ian is travelling to Europe about that time, so won’t be there. I have since made contact with the last incumbent, the Rev Rod Mann; and he intends to attend and is happy to assist with the ceremony. Update: 31/03/10. I caught up with the Rev Ben Usher today. He is representing various RSLs in Adelaide this day and will be unable to attend. He sends his regards to all his former friends and parishioners.

  • Reunion Register

Please use the “Register Here” link in the sidebar and record your data if you intend to be present. We hope to collect names and signatures from those actually attending the service to include in the Book of Memories. The first 40 registrants will be offered printed name tags.

Closing Ceremony – A Successful Day!

April 27th, 2010

God was so good to us, not too hot, and no sign of the rain. A great day for a picnic lunch outdoors, and pleasant inside the very full church.

  • 140 or So Present

In the event, we seated about 90 in the church and the overflow on chairs on the lawn, connected with an outside sound sytem! Totally satisfactory to the organisers and attendees alike. Some stayed for the service, some only for the lunch, but with the 90 printed souvenir badges used by pre-registerd guests, plus the 54 extra hand-written name tags issued on the day, there were well over 140 attendess in total.

Welcome

Call to Worship

Prayer

Hymn (AHB) 68 vv 1,2 & 4

1.  Praise, my soul, the King of heaven;
to his feet thy tribute bring;
ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
who like me his praises should sing:
Praise Him, Praise Him, Hallelujah
Praise the everlasting King.

2.  Praise him for his grace and favour
to our fathers in distress;
praise him still the same for ever,
slow to chide and swift to bless:
Praise Him, Praise Him, Hallelujah
Glorious in his faithfulness.

4. Frail as summer flowers we flourish,
Blows the wind and it is gone;
But while mortals rise and perish,
God endures unchanging on.
Praise Him, Praise Him, Hallelujah
Praise the high eternal one,

Scripture Reading –
Hebrews  11: 1-3, 8-10
John 15; 12-17
Hymn (AHB) 16
1.  The Lord’s my Shepherd, I’ll not
he makes me down to lie .      [want
in pastures green; he leadeth me
the quiet waters by.
2.  My soul he doth restore again;
and me to walk doth make
within the paths of righteousness,
even for his own Name’s sake.
3  Yea, though I walk in death’s dark
yet will I fear no ill;                    [vale,
for thou art with me; and thy rod
and staff my comfort still.
4.  My table thou hast furnished
in presence of my foes;
my head thou dost with oil anoint,
and my cup overflows.
5.  Goodness and mercy all my life
shall surely follow me;
and in God’s house forevermore
my dwelling place shall be.

Hymn (AHB) 10

1.   All people that on earth do dwell,
sing to the Lord with cheerful voice:
him serve with mirth, his praise forth tell,
come ye before him and rejoice.
2.  Know that the Lord, is God indeed;
without our aid he did us make:
we are his folk, he doth us feed,
and for his sheep he doth us take.

3.  O enter then his gates with praise,
approach with joy his courts unto;
praise, laud, and bless his Name
for it is seemly so to do.         [always,
4. For why? the Lord our God is good,
his mercy is for ever sure;
his truth at all times firmly stood,
and shall from age to age endure.

SERMON

Former Ministers greetings.

Thanksgiving Offering

Prayer of Thanks for Ministers, Elders, Trustees, Organists, Fellowship Presidents, Secretaries
and Choristers

Hymn  (AHB) 504

1.  In heavenly love abiding,
no change my heart shall fear.
and safe in such confiding,
for nothing changes here.
the storm may roar without me,
my heart may low be laid,
but God is round about me,
and can I be dismayed?
2.  Wherever he may guide me,
no want shall turn me back.
my Shepherd is beside me,
and nothing can I lack
.
His wisdom ever waking,
his sight is never dim.
He knows the way He’s taking,
and I will walk with Him

3.  Green pastures are before me,
which yet I have not seen.
Bright skies will soon be over me,
Where the dark  clouds have been.
My hope I cannot measure,
my path to life is free.
My Saviour has my treasure,
and he will walk with me.

Prayer of Release

God of endings and beginnings
through your great goodness
this building has been used for your glory in worship, witness and service.

With whatever fears, whatever sadness, whatever excitement may be yours
We go in peace

As a pilgrim people
Always on the way towards a promised goal
We go in peace

With your faith in the pilgrim God
who led his people through the desert into a land of promise
We go in peace

Our Father , who art in……..

Hymn (AHB) 21

1.  I to the hills will lift my eyes:
where shall I find my help?
My help comes only from the Lord
who made the earth and heaven.
2. Your foot he’ll not let slide, nor will
your guardian ever sleep:
the one who guards his people still,
he slumbers not, nor sleeps
3. The Lord will be a shield and
with him at your right hand   [shade:
no harm will come from sun by day
nor from the moon by night.

4 The Lord will keep you from all
will guard your very life        [harm
preserve your going out and in
now and for evermore.

Going Forth Invocation:

We thank God for our Heritage, for faithful men and women who established His cause here, who were not disobedient to the heavenly vision.

But we in a sense are still pioneers –

All the past we leave behind

And we take up the task eternal, and the burden, and the lesson

Conquering, holding, sharing, venturing –

So we go our unknown ways

Benediction

Sth Rhine Church Interior

December 26th, 2009
  • The Front of the Church

South Rhine-5

The stained glass window in the wall above the sanctuary is the memorial to the first Peter Miller, the donor of the land on which the church is built.

The general state of the interior is quite good, with most fittings in working order. The White ants had attacked the corner of the pulpit, the base of the collection plates and the steps to the vestry, but the treatment appears to have stopped any further damage.

Early Music

January 18th, 2010

According to the history notes: “Up and until 1866, the church praise was led by Mr. J.F. Miller with the aid of two tuning forks”.

south-rhine-7This photo shows them on top of the piano, where they still are today.

  • Church Organs

The older “Smith American” pump organ is out in the schoolroom, and still working well; while the “Clough & Darren & Co” organ now graces the church. It is a handsome old instrument with a good range of ‘voice’ stops, and both bass and treble knee swells.

  • Floss Miller – Organist

This wall plaque, recording the service of Christina (Floss) Miller has to be unique.  This must be world record, surely,  66 years as organist in one church!  I bet she could play the entire hymn-book from memory.  This is a truly remarkable testimonial.

World Record Hidden in Historic Rural Church?

April 10th, 2010

The following is the content of a press release sent out in early April

Historic Rural Church Hides World Record

Sixty-six years is a lifetime for many people and for Floss Miller, the long-time organist who started at age 16 in the charming 146 year old South Rhine Uniting Church, this surely must be the world record of loving and devoted service.

Endurance records for organists, where players perform continuously for days, disclose no effort to equal Floss who ‘stayed at the keyboard’ for more than six decades.

The organ she played is a traditional “pump” organ which requires continual pedalling, so the physical, let alone musical effort, can only be marvelled at along with the devotional endurance to play at every service, choir practice and recital over such a long period.

A plaque in her honour graces a wall in the soon-to-be-closed former Presbyterian Church of South Rhine, 4km east of Springton on the outskirts of the Barossa Valley and is to be handed over to one of her descendants at a Reunion and Closing Memorial Service on Anzac Day, Sunday 25 April.

Ann Harkiss, who lives in Floss’s original home and still cherishes Floss’ personal piano, will take custody of the plaque on behalf of the Miller Family.  Former parishioner Greta Holder recalls, “On only one occasion did she give me the privilege of playing the organ for a choir practice as she was unwell. She was a treasure for South Rhine.”  Greta, along with fellow long time parishioner, John Herring will form the music team for the closing service on April 25.

The chapel of South Rhine is in the parish with Mt Pleasant and the congregation is seeking to document yarns, anecdotes and memorabilia of bygone years and are calling on former parishioners, choristers and Sunday School scholars for their cherished memories.

The Reunion will start at 12.30pm on Anzac Day with a ‘shared lunch’ prior to the Memorial Service at 2pm conducted by former minister, the Rev Keith Batt in conjunction with Rev Rod Mann. The Service will be followed by an afternoon tea.

To comment on this ‘world record’, see history of the chapel and details of the Reunion and Memorial Service, to register, or post a memory or yarn, please visit: http://southrhine.biznz.net

Anniversary Teas

December 14th, 2009
  • An Excerpt from “Suggestions”

south-rhine-2“The idea of a picnic is great although one of the traditional celebrations that people came far and wide for was the “Anniversary Tea” held in the evening. A huge fire was lit in the old building at the back around which the men gathered; the kerosene stoves were lit in the Sunday school building and the table in the main room of the Sunday school would be weighed down with all the home made “goodies”. It was a very special experience. I don’t know if this was considered, although it may not suit the older folk.

  • Today…..

The fireplace is still there and seems to be in working order, and there is even a good supply of cut dry firewood on hand, but you would need to share the space with a couple of well nourished ‘huntsman”, and it might take a week to clean out the dust and debris.   You are quite right Chris, it would NOT suit the older folk, of whom we have a good supply.  They don’t go out at night willingly. The shed is still sound, and the ‘Kero’ lamps still in place even if they have been modernised with electricity.

Update – Whacky Angels and Zany Zealots?

February 13th, 2010

This weeks news item about the closing and reunion in the local newspaper, The Leader, has certainly provoked some activity.  The Sth Rhine church has spent the last year quite undisturbed,  quietly settling deeper under its blanket of fallen leaves, but this week some energetic angel, armed with a weed ‘whacker’ has restored the grounds to their former tidiness. Thank you! Someone (else?), with motives less obvious, has taken a lot of trouble to erect a large cross, with a rough inscription; “Slain for His Bride!”

  • Slain For His BrideSlain for His Bride

In Bible analogy, the Church is the Bride of Christ, so it could seem that someone is making the point that by closing this redundant church Jesus is being slain for His bride, the Church.  I for one, would disagree with this interpretation, because it is the fact of the world moving on and leaving this church behind that has brought about the closure.   People worship God in many different ways in the third millenium – E.G. There are between thirty and forty people visiting my “How to Preach” website EVERY DAY.  They ask very searching spiritual questions, and are, for the most part, very serious about their Christian experience.  The fact that todays residents  no longer can, or even want to, attend the little old church 5km down a gravel road at South Rhine is not necessarily an indictment on the established Church.

  • What Do you Think?

Whoever put up this cross obviously feels very strongly about what is happening. What do you think this inscription means? And do you think it is an appropriate response to the closure? Feel free to add your opinion via the comments section below.

  • Update -

Checked the church grounds today (4.3.2010) and the cross has disappeared – like it was never there!  It has gone as mysteriously as it came.
